{"id":1566,"date":"2015-06-18T02:12:33","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T09:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/addison.lwh.dev\/insights\/why-arent-there-more-women-in-top-management\/"},"modified":"2015-06-18T02:12:33","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T09:12:33","slug":"why-arent-there-more-women-in-top-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/addisongroup.com\/insights\/why-arent-there-more-women-in-top-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Aren\u2019t There More Women in Top Management?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The \u201cQueen Bee\u201d syndrome is a myth, according to researchers who argue that&nbsp;professional women keep other females out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, new&nbsp;research&nbsp;blames&nbsp;the lack of women in senior roles&nbsp;on \nmen\u2019s determination to retain power at the top,&nbsp;a research team at \nColumbia Business School, concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new research looks at top management teams in 1,500 companies \nover a 20-year period and finds that rather than women putting female \nsubordinates down, women&nbsp;are more likely to make senior positions where a\n woman had been appointed chief executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When Women Are Appointed to a New Role<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when a woman is appointed to a senior role that is not at \nthe top of the management team, the likelihood of other females being \nappointed falls by 50 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Fraser of the research team at Columbia says: \u201cWomen face an \nimplicit quota, where firms seek to maintain a small number of women on \ntheir top management team, usually only one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile firms gain legitimacy from having women in top management, the value of this legitimacy declines with each woman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fear of Professional Rivalry<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraser says that \u201cit used to be believed that women were less likely \nto help others with career advancement because of fear of professional \nrivalry or of being undermined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut our research&nbsp;shows that the notion that female senior executives\n are \u2018queen bees\u2019 who are unwilling to support other women needs to be \nput to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, she says, the real reason for the shortage of women in top positions is because men still cling on to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Top Management Team at 1,500 Companies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraser and her team studied top management teams at 1,500 companies \nover a 20-year period. They found that far from stopping women climbing \nthe career ladder, a female chief executive was more likely to appoint \nwomen in senior positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study concludes that the most likely explanation for the failure \nof more women to break the glass ceiling was a desire among men to keep \nthem out of the boardroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToo many companies feel that by appointing one woman they have \nsomehow ticked the \u2018diversity box\u2019 and don\u2019t need to appoint \nanymore,\u201d&nbsp;Fraser says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The \u201cQueen Bee\u201d syndrome is a myth, according to researchers who argue that&nbsp;professional women keep other females out.
