You\u2019ve just accepted an offer for the job you\u2019ve been chasing for months. You are excited and relieved, but you\u2019re wondering how your boss is going to react when you resign. If you are a valuable resource, then your boss and your company won\u2019t want to see you walk out the door, especially to the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will make every attempt to convince you to stay, either by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Making you a counter offer<\/li><li>Making you feel incredibly guilty and disloyal<\/li><li>\u2018Loving\u2019 you like they\u2019ve never \u2018loved\u2019 you before \u2013 be suspicious of this<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Being made an attractive counter offer is instantly good for your \nego, but you must take a number of things into consideration before \nsaying \u201cthanks\u201d or \u201cno thanks\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You have only received a counter offer because you resigned. It is a\n purely reactive tactic from your employer and should make you wonder \nwhether you need to resign every time you want to improve your \nsituation. If your employer thought you were truly worthy, why didn\u2019t \nthey improve your situation anyway?<\/li><li>Do your reasons for wanting to leave still exist? You may have a \nnumber of reasons \u2013 salary too low, no promotion in sight, don\u2019t like \nyour boss. You may be offered more money to stay, which can be tempting,\n but if you still have other issues outstanding, you\u2019ll probably end up \nleaving anyway.<\/li><li>Despite what your employer is saying to you, they will probably now \nconsider you a risk and may make contingency plans without your \nknowledge. You may not be seen as a true member of the team<\/li><li>The counter offer could simply be an interim tactic from your employer to bridge a gap while they look to replace you.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Much research has been done to measure what happens to employees who \naccept counter offers. The research shows that only 6 out of 100 \nemployees are still with their company after 12 months. This suggests 2 \nimportant points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Salary was hardly ever the prime motivator for resigning \u2013 more money didn\u2019t ultimately change the true state of play<\/li><li>Things didn\u2019t take long to return to the way they were before the resignation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So before accepting a counter offer, ask yourself why your employer \nhas made the offer.
