Building a personal network means \nmeeting, contacting and maintaining relationships with people who have \nthe ability to help you succeed. Most people have been in your situation\n at one time or another, so they can empathize with you and offer you \nassistance \u2014 whether it be arranging introductions or offering advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Attend industry events.<\/strong><br>\nCheck the media and professional organizations\u2019 calendars for listings \nof events in your area. Whether the event is a straight networking event\n or topic specific, it is an excellent way to meet others in the \nindustry. If you don\u2019t feel comfortable going alone, get a few friends \nor colleagues to join you. Make it a point to meet and talk to at least \nthree new people (don\u2019t forget to get their business card). Follow up \nwith the people you met in a quick, next-day e-mail. The goal is to make\n an impression so they will remember you the next time you contact them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep a black book.<\/strong><br>\nMaintain an address book that includes contact information for former \nmanagers, department heads and colleagues. There will come a time where \nyou will want to contact these people again for a reference or simple \nadvice. Drop them a line regularly as to keep their contact information \nup to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Associate yourself.<\/strong><br>\nFind a professional organization to join. Typically, these groups have \non-line communications and\/or networking opportunities to keep you in \ncontact with other members. These are people you don\u2019t even know that \nare willing to help you! This can be a terrific resource for you to \ngather information about a particular industry or hear about current job\n opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #2: Using your power<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep in touch.<\/strong><br>\nCommunicate with your contact list via a quick e-mail or phone call \nevery month or two. This will keep you fresh in their minds when they \nhear of a new job opportunity or company that may interest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Know what you\u2019re asking for.<\/strong><br>\nIn this day and age, people are extremely busy. When calling on your \npeers for assistance, be clear in your request and expectations. People \nwant to feel as if they are actually helping you; however, if you don\u2019t \nknow what you are asking for, you\u2019ll just end up frustrating everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get contacts from your contacts.<\/strong><br>\nHere\u2019s the best kept-secret in the world of networking: It\u2019s great to \nmeet new people, but think about how many more people they know. During \nyour next conversation, ask your contact to recommend three people you \ncould speak to about your career path or industry developments. It\u2019s \nimportant to be specific and courteous when requesting information \u2014 \ndon\u2019t forget, your contacts are putting their own name on the line for \nyou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Return the favors.<\/strong><br>\nYou can also help your contacts gain access to companies and information\n via your personal network. Offer assistance regularly, especially if \nthat person has helped you in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mind your manners.<\/strong><br>\nDon\u2019t forget to say \u201cthank you\u201d to those who have helped you.
