The only thing left to do is give \nnotice at your present company. The moment you\u2019ve dreamed about is \nfinally here. But before you march into your manager\u2019s office to say \u201cI \nquit\u201d, consider these suggestions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Discuss your resignation plan with a friend.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask a friend to do a sanity check on your\n resignation statement. A loyal and objective third party can help you \nde-spear your parting words and blow off a little steam before you head \ninto the boss\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keep your plans under wraps with co-workers.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard, but keep quiet about your \nresignation plans until after you\u2019ve made it official with your manager.\n Your reputation could be foiled by a gossipy co-worker who gets to your\n boss before you do. It\u2019s unprofessional, and the implication is that \nyou\u2019ve been speaking negatively about the company to others in the \noffice. Plus, no one likes to be the last to know \u2014 especially someone \nyou\u2019ll need as a future reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plan your reply if you are made a counter-offer.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo way,\u201d is probably not the best \nresponse here, although it would feel great. Politely thank him or her \nfor seeing you as such a valuable employee and say \u201cno, thank you\u201d. \nCounter offers are common these days, because talented employees are \ndifficult and expensive to replace. The first question that should come \nto your mind when you get a counter offer is \u201cwhy are they giving me \nthis now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Request an exit interview.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If your company does not require this \nstep, request to hold an exit interview a few days before your departure\n (if you are harboring any ill will, it should be almost gone by this \npoint). This is your opportunity to (confidentially) cite improvements, \ninconsistencies and management issues. Create talking points for \nspecific and targeted suggestions to help the next employee avoid such \nconflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prepare information for your manager\/successor.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is a sure-fire way to make a \ngood last impression with the boss, this is it. Managers and co-workers \noften have only a limited understanding of your project\/client status. \nSo that they don\u2019t feel like you\u2019ve left them holding the bag, create a \nstatus report for your manager prior to your departure. It may take a \nfew extra hours, but your managers will be singing your praises long \nafter you\u2019re gone. Good luck!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anticipate the inevitable three questions: why, where and when?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Why?<\/em><\/strong> Always take \nthe high road! Despite how you may feel, this is not the time to turn to\n criticize the company and co-workers whom you are leaving behind. Keep \nyour answer brief and professional. It\u2019s important to leave behind an \nimpeccable record, because it\u2019s a small world and you never know whether\n you\u2019ll work with \u2014 or for \u2014 some of the same people again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Where?<\/em><\/strong> \nTranslation: \u201cWhat does that company have that we don\u2019t?\u201d Fill your \nmanager in on the new opportunity, but don\u2019t gloat over your good \nfortune. And never compare the two jobs. The goal is to protect your \nreputation and to leave people feeling good about your tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>When?<\/em><\/strong> It\u2019s \ncustomary to give two weeks notice, however, if you are deeply \nentrenched in a project that needs you to see it through, discuss a \nlater start date with your new employer.
