If done wrong, you\u2019ll never get in the door. Consider these tips below to help you develop a resume that will truly impress any potential employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Format<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Use Microsoft Word, not Quark or other random format.<\/strong>\n Nine out of 10 people don\u2019t have Quark, especially if you\u2019re dealing \nwith the Human Resource Department. This is not the time to \ndifferentiate yourself \u2014 save that for the interview.<\/li><li><strong>Choose an easy-to-read font that is standard on most computers.<\/strong>(i.e.\n Helvetica or Arial). If you\u2019ve selected a font that is not loaded on \nthe hiring manager\u2019s computer, it will default to another choice that \nmay cause spacing and style issues.<\/li><li><strong>Be consistent.<\/strong>\n Keep an eye out for consistent spacing, use of italics and\/or bold and \npunctuation. If you include periods on the first bulleted list, include \nit on ALL bulleted lists.<\/li><li><strong>Keep creativity to a minimum.<\/strong>\n It\u2019s very tempting to include creative fonts and\/or graphics on your \nresume, but unless you\u2019re a designer (and even if you are), leave the \ncreativity for your portfolio. Resumes should be clean and professional,\n not a character statement.<\/li><li><strong>Have at least two other people proof your resume.<\/strong> You\u2019ve looked at it long enough and chances are, you\u2019ll miss any spelling errors or typos.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Consider eliminating the Objective statement.<\/strong>\n It\u2019s a textbook resume element, however Objective statements are often \nlimiting and unnecessary. It\u2019s also the quickest way for your resume to \nend up in the circular file because your objective \u201cisn\u2019t the right fit \nfor this job\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>Eschew excess and arcane words and phrases.<\/strong> Big words don\u2019t make you look smarter, they make the reader feel dumb. Keep it clean and concise.<\/li><li><strong>Check the verb tenses.<\/strong>\n Here\u2019s an easy one that is wrong nine times out of 10. Current jobs \nshould be described in the present tense. Previous jobs should be \ndescribed in the past tense.<\/li><li><strong>Be brief in your descriptions.<\/strong>\n Your resume is only a summary of your work history. You\u2019ll need \nsomething to talk about in your interview, so don\u2019t try to tell your \nlife story on your resume.<\/li><li><strong>Leave the personal pronouns at home.<\/strong>\n I, we and you are not appropriate for a resume. In the end, all the \nextra words needed to support the personal pronouns waste precious real \nestate space on the page.<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t include salary info.<\/strong>\n Here\u2019s another mistake that take you out of the running before you ever\n have a chance to interview. If a company requests this information, you\n can include it in the cover letter.<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t lie!<\/strong>\n You\u2019d be amazed at the details potential employers check up on these \ndays. It\u2019s okay to highlight certain job responsibilities, etc., but \ndon\u2019t exaggerate dates employed, job titles, education or certification.\n It will catch up with you.<\/li><li><strong>Attention Designers:<\/strong> Include your personal portfolio link and\/or links to sites you have completed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Resume: If done right, it\u2019s your ticket in the door.
