And the trend is skyrocketing. <a href=\"http:\/\/flurrymobile.tumblr.com\/post\/115194992530\/shopping-productivity-and-messaging-give-mobile\">According to Flurry Analytics<\/a>,  mobile app usage grew by 76% in 2014, and shopping apps on iOS and  Android increased an incredible 174% year-over-year\u2014220% on Android  alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enterprises have clearly seized upon the opportunity to leverage  mobile technologies to connect with consumers, especially in retail. But  another sizable opportunity is ripe for attention: using mobile  technologies to connect with an organization\u2019s own employees, offering  new ways for employees to feel better about the work they do and  strengthen their commitment to the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corporations enjoy more success when their employees are engaged<a href=\"https:\/\/aimconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/employee-getting-good-news-on-mobile-phone_957.jpg\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Investment in employee engagement can produce a sustainable competitive advantage. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/home.aspx\">Gallup<\/a>, the leading researcher for employee data, concluded in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/07\/employee-engagement-does-more\/\">meta-analysis of 1.4 million employees<\/a>\n that organizations with a high level of engagement report 22% higher \nproductivity. (Gallup defines \u201cengaged\u201d as \u201cinvolved in, enthusiastic \nabout and committed to their work and workplace.\u201d) In addition, highly \nengaged organizations have double the rate of success of lower engaged \norganizations, as well as lower rates of absenteeism and employee \nturnover. Engagement also improves quality of work and health, with \nhigher scoring business units reporting 48% fewer safety incidents. The \nratio of engaged to disengaged workers even correlates strongly with \nearnings per share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more, employees are interested in defining their motivation \nto work by more than just their paycheck. Workers want to feel they\u2019re \nin control, to have more opportunities to learn, to be part of a winning\n organization, and to connect with something greater than themselves. \nToward this end, companies like Bunchball focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bunchball.com\/blog\/post\/1591\/five-intrinsic-motivators-and-how-they-impact-employee-engagement?mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRols6nIZKXonjHpfsX57%2BktXqG3lMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4DSsZgI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFQ7DDMa9ryrgJWRT0TD7slJfbfYRPf6Ba2Jw4rQ%3D%3D\">intrinsic motivators<\/a> that have the most impact on their employees \u2014 autonomy, mastery, purpose, progress, and social interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/addisongroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/US-employee-engagement.png\" alt=\"US employee engagement\" class=\"wp-image-2158\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Millennials constitute a growing segment of the workforce and, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/181289\/majority-employees-not-engaged-despite-gains-2014.aspx\">according to a recent Gallup study<\/a>, they are the least engaged employee group at corporations, at a\n lowly 28.9% in 2014. Gallup further notes that \u201cmillennials are \nparticularly less likely than other generations to say they \u2018have the \nopportunity to do what they do best\u2019 at work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not just millennials. In the same 2014 study, Gallup found \nthat 51% of all employees are \u201cnot engaged\u201d and even worse, 17.5% were \n\u201cactively disengaged\u201d in 2014. It comes as no shock that employers are <a href=\"http:\/\/gbr.pepperdine.edu\/2014\/12\/trends-in-employee-turnover-and-retention\/\">struggling with employee loyalty and the costs of employee turnover<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, success or lack of success in business will be determined\n by how well a company keeps its own employees engaged and enthusiastic.\n Thus, mobile technology presents a tremendous opportunity for \nenterprises to weave a new engagement fabric throughout the workforce. \nThe intimacy, immediacy and relevancy of mobile technology allows for \nsmall, satisfying, targeted interactions that provide value at just the \nright time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are just a few scenarios to demonstrate how enterprises can use mobile technology for employee engagement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Pushing corporate information to employees on mobile apps as opposed to memos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees currently receive notices regarding important company \nannouncements in cluttered email inboxes\u2014or even on posters passed \naround on paper or nailed to break room walls. Imagine if there was a \ncompany app for employees that notified workers of announcements and new\n policies right on their personal mobile devices and provided instant \naccess to documents and forms. These notifications could be extremely \npersonalized and relevant, helping employees to feel more engaged and \nless overwhelmed by organization noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Sharing best practices with other employees on a company\u2019s social media app<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea for an employee-centric app is particularly compelling for \ncompanies with employees dispersed throughout multiple locations. A \nfield agent can share a sensational hook that is really working to sell a\n new product. A bartender or barista can share a cool new drink \nconcoction with other bartenders and baristas. The reason to share might\n come from a motivation to help others, as a demonstration of mastery, \nor a result of financial incentives or other rewards. Either way, both \nthe company and its employees experience a tangible benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Engaging and updating employees on community initiatives like fundraisers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppose an organization hosts a canned food drive, but employees \ncan\u2019t see how much has accumulated because the donations are stacked in a\n storeroom of an office building. A mobile app with a real-time \ninteractive counter can push personal and immediate updates to employee \nmobile phones along with encouraging notes and challenges. Suddenly, \ncontributions have more context and employees feel like they\u2019re a part \nof something bigger. This can be applied to any charitable act, such as \nholiday giving trees, or something more competitive, like individual \nfundraising as part of a team effort. Collectivism becomes extremely \nimportant in these contexts, especially considering it\u2019s not often a \nfactor in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become an early adopter or wait on it?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the skyrocketing popularity of smart devices, few companies \nhave taken concrete steps to embrace their potential to transform \ninternal communications and business practices. This reluctance feels \nsimilar to the hesitancy companies showed in embracing websites in the \nmid-1990s, but the Internet did not go away, and neither will mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need a success story to convince you of the usefulness of \nmobile technology in the workplace, there\u2019s one in the airline industry.\n Nearly all flight manuals and navigation charts are now available in \ndigital form on iPads for pilots to access and use in the cockpit, \nreplacing 25\u201350 pounds of paper formerly carried to and from every \nflight. This practice, first adopted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2011\/06\/alaska-airlines-faa-ipad\/\">Alaska Airlines<\/a>, and then to a greater extent by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gottabemobile.com\/2013\/03\/21\/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-refurbs-100-off\/\">American Airlines<\/a>, is now becoming standard in the industry. Additionally, Boeing recently made <a href=\"http:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/2013-09-24-Boeing-Launches-New-Maintenance-Apps-for-iPad\">airplane maintenance manuals available on iPads<\/a>, making it easier for workers to perform their tasks and improving productivity in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way that airlines followed the lead of Alaska and  American in lightening the load for their pilots, once a few  high-profile companies begin to leverage mobile technologies for  employee engagement in other useful ways, competitors will scramble to  follow suit. With mobility, technology and psychology are converging to  form a gargantuan opportunity for organizations.
