\u201cCulture fit\u201d can be the deciding factor in whether a candidate secures a contract position, consulting engagement, or full-time position. It can determine whether a person is likely to succeed in a particular work environment regardless of the technical skills needed to do the work. Will that individual \u201cfit in\u201d with the people who work there and the norms that have been established?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, different companies can mean very different things when they talk about culture fit. They can also have different interpretations of what constitutes a culture fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Culture Fit Can Actually Be About Professionalism<\/h3>\n\n\n

Culture\n fit is not always about culture. When some companies say they want a \ngood culture fit, what they mean is a professional who brings strong \nsoft skills to the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft skills are skills that are necessary to do a job effectively \nthat are not a direct result of standard education or formal training. \nThey include good communication, positive attitude, organization, \ninitiative, reliability, flexibility, and cooperativeness. Soft skills \nare part of culture fit when they represent the work ethic, values, and \noperations of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of us tend to believe that our soft skills are more developed \nthan they actually are. We can also misconstrue what a soft skill is. \nFor example, \u201cgood communication\u201d is often understood to mean being able\n to express complex ideas in a way that other people can understand. \nAlthough this is an important skill, good communication more often \nrefers to a positive social and organizational behavior. A person with \ngood communication doesn\u2019t surprise or confuse their coworkers. People \nknow what they can expect because that person keeps everyone informed of\n what they are working on, where they are, and why they make the choices\n they do. Usually, good communicators are also good listeners. Poor \ncommunicators, although they may do good work, can become a source of \nstress in an office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best consultants constantly hone their soft skills and work hard \nto be a good culture fit\u2014in a professional sense\u2014just about anywhere \nthey go. They can walk into any environment, at any company, in any \nindustry, and be trusted to conduct themselves professionally in \naddition to providing the needed technical expertise. Contrastingly, \npeople who lack soft skills require a niche or more forgiving work \nenvironment, thereby limiting their opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Culture Fit Can Be Who You Are Outside of Work<\/h3>\n\n\n

One\u2019s\n interests, personality, or social chemistry can be important to a \ncompany because of the industry or product the business is in. It can \nalso be important because of who else works there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are obvious differences between companies. Some environments \nare laid back. Others are regimented. Some are loud and extroverted. \nOthers are quiet and focused. Dress codes are all over the board and \ncore values and beliefs vary widely from company to company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

REI, for example, prefers to hire people whose passions outside of \nwork relate to the outdoors. They want to employ people who not only \nunderstand their market but are<\/em> their market. Other companies \nhave other needs. Sometimes a team is looking for \u201cmore people like \nthem.\u201d Other times they are looking to fill a gap for a particular type \nof personality that will complement the group and provide something of \nvalue that the team needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trick with culture fit is that candidates rarely have the insight\n into a company and individual departments to know whether or not the \nenvironment will suit them. That is where AIM can help. One of the ways \nwe are different as a consultancy is the solid relationship we have with\n clients. Taking the time to get to know our clients as well as we do \nmeans that we already know the culture of the company, the make-up of \nthe team, and the needs of hiring managers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know ahead of time what kind of candidate is desired. That is why \nwe meet our candidates in person. When we set up an interview with the \nhiring manager, we want to have already determined that our consultant \nis the perfect fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set Yourself Up For Success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can maximize your opportunities by remembering the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Be professional.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A\n good consultant is a subject matter expert who can interact with all \ntypes of individuals in a diverse array of company environments. Because\n you don\u2019t know what behaviors are expected company to company, set the \nbar high. Arrive early, come prepared, and hone your soft skills as well\n as your technical expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Share who you are.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

People\n are looking to work with people they like. You should focus on how your\n skills can solve a problem, but it can help to state your hobbies, \ninterests, and passions in appropriate places on your resume, online \nprofiles, and in conversation. Your love of 3D modeling, volunteering, \nor weekend warrior soccer may be what gets you the opportunity of a \nlifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Let us help you.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
