Kara holds a PhD in Nutritional Biology and has over 15 years of experience working on food system development, obesity prevention, and food policy issues in the Central Valley.  As a USDA clinical researcher she specialized in maternal health and childhood obesity prevention and taught nutritional science and ecosystems courses.  Currently, she is the Coordinator for the Fresno County Food System Alliance and Fresno County Farm to School Committee working with local leaders on food system development projects that will provide healthier food options and new agri-food system related business ventures for residents in our communities.

My grandparents owned grocery stores and coops in the Central Valley from the 40’s to the 70’s. It is through this deep connection with the community and ag producers in the region that I felt drawn towards fostering change in our food system to address inequalities and public health. Working on place based food systems development projects that help provide access to healthy, locally sourced food for all our residents is a triple bottom line solution to address our obesity epidemic while ensuring economic and agricultural viability.”
